Lyrics

Old family friend. I met him young

An acquired taste, but full of fun

Like oil and water. We clashed day one

But everyone loved him, so I’d press on

Build up some tolerance—work him into my day

We’d grow up together and we’d be OK

Thick as thieves. Together we would ride

All eyes on us. Filled an emptiness inside

Then we clicked. Reckless and unbound

Nothing was sacred with the two of us around

Trading good times for toxic bliss

Who needs enemies with a friend like this?

My friend is demanding. Impossible to please

Try and keep up. My friend is my disease

My Disease—My Disease

We’re best buddies me and my disease

My Disease—My Disease

Going down together me and my disease

Barges in Putting me on the spot

Hijacking the moment whether I liked it or not

Turning the tables Playing with his host

We’d make things a mess When I was needed the most

Possessive and clever, he wants what I hold dear

He aches to own me as he whispers in my ear

My Disease—My Disease

Spiritual Warfare disguised as my disease

My Disease—My Disease

Satan wants to wreck me with a gift called my disease

My disease hates me—he did from the start

His mission in life is to tear mine apart

He delights in my failure—finds joy in my loss

I could only serve one master—he dominated my thoughts

Admitting I was powerless—I surrendered to God

Who ripped my soul from the grip of a hateful evil fraud

I rejoice in my salvation thank God every day

He sent His Son to set me free and wash my sin away

My Disease—My Disease

God snatched me from the jaws of my disease

My Disease—My Disease

God’s mercy set me free from my disease

About this Song

I’m in the program. I’ve been to my share of meetings.

It strikes me how my brothers and sisters call their addiction “My Disease."

It’s as though this affliction isn’t a thing but a person; someone they know and have a relationship with.

They say things like “My disease is patient.” “My disease tapped me on the shoulder…,” and “My disease is clever.”.

That really struck me.

Then, one night, a gentleman said, “This is Spiritual Warfare. It’s Satan."

That crystallized it for me.

Sure, there is such a thing as an alcoholic personality.

People can be, and are, predisposed to addiction.

And yes, alcohol materially changes the neuroplasticity of everyone’s brain, not just the predisposed.

But I believe that addiction is the devil’s agent.

He uses it to ruin us because he hates humanity.

Have you ever had a bad friend?

Someone who manipulated you and pulled you down?

I wrote this song as a story of a bad friend who bonded with me so he could take everything I have and destroy me, because he hates me.

My Disease.
