Lyrics
Weekly meeting—doing time
In a chair right by the door
The stories flow
They’re hard to hear. So vulnerable and raw
Hard-earned truths are well and good
But what’s that got to do with me?
I never bottomed out like them
Don’t share their misery
Denial
By the end I convince myself
I’m a misfit in that room
My act was more together
Never suffered doom and gloom
Then something took form behind me
Like a human presence felt
A resonating voice that murmured
You’re dishonest with yourself
Denial
Denial Denial Denial
Denial
Denial Denial Denial
I denied that I was selfish
I denied that I was cruel
Imagine someone as smart as me being subverted like a fool?
Dismissing sin that festers
For which I must atone
Shiny on the outside, but inside—dead man’s bones
Denial
Denial Denial Denial
Denial
Denial Denial Denial
Like Adam I was hiding Naked and ashamed
Doubling down on anger Finding someone else to blame
Put the poison in a jar And covered it with lies
But buried sins don’t go away They destroy you from inside
Denial
Denial Denial Denial
Denial
Denial Denial Denial
About this Song
Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him,
“Where are you?”
He said,
“I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
(Genesis 3:10, NASB)
During my early days in the program I developed a meeting routine. I sat in the back, right by the door so I could say the Our Father at the end, put my chair away, and get out.
I had my reasons. It was pretty clear to me that I was a lot better off than everyone else there. After all, my drinking never caused me to crash my car, get a DUI, lose my job, get divorced, lose my house or do prison time.
I was different! Maybe I was in the wrong place!
As a meeting wound down, I was indulging in this nonsense when a deep, resonant voice in my right ear said, "You are dishonest with yourself."
Hmmm
Lacking a relationship with a merciful God, what am I supposed to do with my screw-ups?
I have to get on with my day, right? What are my options, other than to explain them away, bury them and move on.
Problem is, buried sins don’t go away. They destroy you from inside.
That moment brought me to a place that was captured in Washed—more humble and accountable. It takes courage to face up to the past and account for it. Some of it is buried so deeply.
It’s a continuous process.
