Lyrics

Like a bug on a pitcher plant Buckled up for the ride

Drinking nectar, sweet descent As I rot from inside

Free to fly I slide deeper Hopelessly ensnared

Down I go! Ruin awaits me! I’m completely unaware

Then it hits me I’m shaken by a cold slap in the face

I’m powerless over the tour guide gleefully steering my fall from grace

Suddenly vulnerable, defeated, crying “What have I done?”

A lifetime wasted under the illusion of control when I had none

Surrender! A deep and long exhale

Surrender! Unlock my grip remove the veil

Surrender! All my fight my pride released

Surrender! Only God subdues the beast

Empty-handed I’m gutted and I’m lost

Each step forward won’t erase the line that I’ve crossed

A dark journey—I yearn for answers, but I’m denied

Until gradually the Lord removes the scales from my eyes

Surrender! Die to self and let Him in

Surrender! Be accountable to my sin

Surrender! Don’t hide from what I’ve done

Surrender! The Father saved me through His Son

My pride leads me nowhere—Holding hands with my disease

It’s self-righteous—Gets me sideways and steals my peace

The more I kill it the more the Spirit works through me

Take out the garbage and make room for His beauty

Surrender! Surrender’s clean surrender’s pure

Surrender! Surrender’s the power to endure

Surrender! Father let Your kingdom come

Surrender! Father let Your will be done

Surrender! Lord may I surrender today

Surrender! Lord grant I not get in the way

Surrender! Fill my soul like a gentle breeze

Surrender! Lord make me a channel of Your peace

About this Song

Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.
(Luke 1:38, NABRE)

The morning after yet another bender, I found myself standing at the brink before my depleted wife.

Finally, the full weight of my reality struck me.

I was no match for alcohol.

I ran out of excuses, exhausted every narrative and broke every promise.

Every self-powered plan collapsed.

I was a failure.

I could not win.

All I could do was exhale—a deep and long exhale. A friend called it a “Terminal Breath” and he was right.

I died. I surrendered.

Little did I know that I was right where God wanted me.

Blind and lost, God led the next step, then the next, with no line of sight into the outcome—no progress to report.

I have since learned that surrender is strength.

Emptying myself is powerful.

Trust me, I have a lot of emptying to do!
